It doesn't' have to be people that are sent to draw maps or to "bring the lands back" to the center, and an expedition is not the only type of the cycles of accumulation. In this book Bruno Latour brings together these different approaches to provide a lively and Latour's 1987 book Science in Action: How to Follow Scientists and Engineers through Society is one of the key texts of the sociology of scientific knowledge in which he famously wrote his Second Principle as follows: "Scientist and engineers speak in the name of new allies that they have shaped and enrolled; representatives among other representatives, they add these unexpected resources to tip the balance of force in their favor." Bruno Latour in Science in action suggests that science has two faces: one that knows and one that does not know yet (Latour 7). What is known exists in what are known as black boxes. To some extent these represent the thoroughly tested (and not falsified) paradigms or concepts inveterate to a particular scientific discipline.

The English edition was published in 1987 by Harvard University Press. It is written in a textbook style, and contains a full-featured approach to the empirical study of science and technology.
